ANN ARBOR, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The law firm of Estey & Bomberger is offering to protect the legal rights of the University of Michigan sexual abuse survivors of Dr. Robert E. Anderson. The nationally recognized and award-winning law firm represents nearly two dozen Anderson survivors, including some whose stories are posted on this website. Board of Regents Chairman Ron Weiser also acknowledged that he was a victim of Dr. Anderson.
The University announced that thousands of former student-athletes would be receiving a letter and/or email asking them to cooperate with an outside law firm in their investigation of Dr. Anderson.
"As the investigation begins, it is important that victims and witnesses have representation before a University-hired law firm," advocate and attorney Stephen Estey said. "Our clients have expressed a strong desire to ensure that what happened to them never happens to anyone else again at U-M. Thus, both the investigating law firm and the Board of Regents need to understand that a decades-long history of sexual misconduct at the University must come to an end."
Michigan officials were warned more than 40 years ago that Dr Anderson, then the director of the University Health Service, was sexually abusing students. He was demoted when the abuse allegations came to light, but was then hired by the Athletic Department as its team physician.
The law firm of WilmerHale has been hired by the University to investigate the Dr. Anderson case. It is the same firm that investigated the sexual abuse allegations against former Provost Martin A. Philbert. The Provost office is the department in charge of investigating sexual misconduct cases. WilmerHale can be contacted directly at 877-428-9667 or at UofM@wilmerhale.com.
"We know that Dr. Anderson abused many alumni who were not athletes," Estey said. "Non-athlete alumni survivors should immediately reach out to us for a free and 100% confidential consultation."
