CAMDEN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--American Water (NYSE: AWK), the largest publicly-traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, announced today that it made a contribution of $500,000 to the American Water Charitable Foundation (AWCF), to support coronavirus relief efforts.
American Water and the AWCF also recently announced a $100,000 donation to Feeding America to help food banks across the country support individuals and families impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19).
AWCF, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization funded by American Water, will disburse the funds directly to several critical COVID-19 specific initiatives, including the American Water Employee Crisis Fund and a new community-focused COVID-19 Response Fund. The AWCF Board of Trustees will oversee grant selection and allocation of funds.
“Providing this donation to our charitable foundation ensures that every grant dollar will be awarded directly to organizations making a valuable impact in the communities served by American Water and managing through the COVID-19 crisis,” said Walter Lynch, chief executive officer, American Water. “We know our customers, our communities and our employees have all been personally impacted. By also contributing to our Employee Crisis Fund, we help the very people who are so critical in providing an essential service to our customers. We also are able to help our customers through the COVID-19 Response Fund by supporting programs that will make the communities where they live stronger.”
Since 2012, the American Water Charitable Foundation has invested more than $5.5 million in programs and organizations that are important to American Water employees and the communities it serves. The American Water Employee Crisis Fund was established in 2018 to provide emergency financial assistance to employees experiencing financial hardship.
“There has never been a more critical time in our country to support one another or lend a charitable hand to our communities and our employees in need. We are honored to do our part,” said Carrie Williams, president, American Water Charitable Foundation.
