With a market share of above 50%, Alipay was the leading third-party mobile payment service in China in 2018. In addition, it was the top payment method used by Chinese consumers on Alibaba's E-Commerce platforms, according to the figures revealed in the report. In addition to online shopping, Alipay customers use the service to purchase in-store, make bill payments and transfer money.
Alipay to be accepted at more locations overseas
Moreover, Alipay is increasingly used by Chinese consumers when they travel abroad. To tap into this emerging market opportunity, Alipay cooperates with merchants and payment providers across the globe to grow its international acceptance. At home, Alipay faces growing competition from the number two leading mobile wallet WeChat Pay, and other emerging rivals such as JD Pay and Suning Pay, in regard to the report.
