Medical Economics® Announces the Winners of the 2019 Physician Writing Contest

The contest prompted physicians to share a transformative moment of growth in their practicing career.

CRANBURY, N.J.--()--Medical Economics®, a multimedia platform that provides resources for physicians that include practice management tips, health technology and expert voices, announced three winners of the 2019 Medical Economics® Physician Writing contest. This year’s topic, “How I Became a Better Doctor,” provided physicians a platform to share an influential moment that impacted their career as a health care provider in a positive way.

The 2019 Physician Writing contest received more than 350 submissions from practicing physicians nationwide. First- through third-place winners received a $2,500, $1,500 or $1,000 cash prize, respectively.

“This year’s physician writing contest was a tremendous success,” said Chris Mazzolini, editorial director of Medical Economics®. “Our audience of physicians shared with us some amazing stories about how they each, in their own way, learned how to become a better doctor. They were by turns inspirational, heartbreaking, funny and triumphant.”

The complete list of winners is as follows:

First place – “The Patient That Lowered My Shield” by Ran Neiger, M.D., Dayton, Ohio.

Second place – “The Hope of Living Better” by Scarlett Hao, M.D., Greenville, North Carolina.

Third place – “Learning How to Listen” by Rachel Fleishman, M.D., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In his first-place essay, Neiger articulates the heartbreaking moment a young patient received a diagnosis of an aggressive cancer and how her experience grounded his glorified view of oncologic surgery. Only a second-year resident at the time, he recalls a shift in focus from clinical to emotional when caring for her serious condition. Neiger describes this remarkable girl, who serves as the title for his piece, as the patient who lowered his shield.

“Year after year, the Medical Economics® Physician Writing contest recognizes incredible firsthand accounts from health care professionals across the country,” said Mike Hennessy Jr., president and CEO of MJH Life Sciences™. “We are honored to highlight the voices of those who continue to make the medical field one driven by passion.”

In addition to having their essays featured online, the top three winners will have their writing published in print issues of Medical Economics®, starting with the first-place essay running on Nov. 25. Second- and third-place essays will run in the subsequent issues on Dec. 10 and Dec. 25. Medical Economics® will also feature honorable mention essays in print throughout 2020.
