PROVIDENCE, R.I.--()--Rhode Islanders Sponsoring Education (RISE), an organization that mentors children whose parents have been incarcerated and works to provide them with private school scholarships, today named Corvias, a long-term solutions and management partner to the U.S. military, municipalities and colleges and universities, a Partner in Philanthropy.

Each November on National Philanthropy Day, local chapters of the Association for Fundraising Professionals recognize up to two individuals or businesses that have furthered the achievement of their non-profit’s mission as Partners in Philanthropy. This year, Corvias was selected by RISE as a Partner in Philanthropy to acknowledge the company’s generous donations and volunteer efforts to support RISE’s programs.

“We are so grateful to Corvias for not only sponsoring two students but for partnering with us on our Back to School event and helping us with our annual appeal mailing,” said Kristen Haffenraffer, RISE executive director. “They are committed to not only supporting us financially but in many other ways as well.”

Corvias chooses to give in ways that have a long-term impact to positively influence the communities where its team members live and work. The Corvias Giving Back program encourages its team members to support non-profit organizations that support the military, education and their local cities and towns. Corvias Founder John Picerne is also the founder of Corvias Foundation, a private charity devoted to helping military dependents achieve their higher education goals.

“At Corvias, generously giving back to the communities where we live and work is one of our Core Principles,” said Janet Colantuono, Corvias principal. “We enjoy working with RISE because we know that our efforts will have a positive long-term impact on the lives of deserving students.”

Corvias joins the more than 50 Partners in Philanthropy who will be recognized during the Association of Fundraising Professionals Rhode Island Chapter’s 32nd annual National Philanthropy Day. Corvias will receive a certificate and pin in addition to special recognition that will honor the company’s philanthropic efforts geared at improving the lives of children of parents who have a history of incarceration.

Founded by Dr. Timothy Flanigan and Dr. Kevin Vigilante, RISE launched in 1997 with a mission to provide scholarships to children of women who have a history of incarceration. In 2004, RISE broadened the service population to include children with a father who has been incarcerated.

About RISE
The mission of RISE is to provide scholarships and mentoring to the children of currently and formerly incarcerated parents in order to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty, crime and addiction that too often threatens them. RISE was founded in 1997 by Drs. Tim Flanigan and Kevin Vigilante, two members of the Brown University Medical faculty who worked with incarcerated and addicted women. They identified an intergenerational socio medical syndrome in the children of their patients that includes the following symptoms: poverty, under-education, joblessness, homelessness, sexual abuse, teen pregnancy, depression, drug addiction, domestic or other violence, involvement with the criminal justice system, incarceration and premature death. Their research led them to the conclusion, that the best way to prevent this syndrome was by ensuring the educational success of these children.
