North Carolina Manufacturing Extension Partnership Recognizes Enviva with Leadership in Manufacturing Award for Sustainability

BETHESDA, Md.--()--Enviva Partners, LP (“Enviva”), the world’s largest producer of wood pellets, a renewable and sustainable energy source used to generate electricity and heat, today was honored to receive an award from the National Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NCMEP) in recognition of the company’s outstanding sustainability practices. Part of the National Manufacturing Extension Partnership network, NCMEP is a leading public-private partnership that provides manufacturing extension services to North Carolina based firms. The 2019 Manufacturing Leadership Awards took place this week in Winston- Salem, N.C. Enviva was nominated by Lauren Dudley of NC Community Colleges.

John Keppler, Chairman and CEO of Enviva, made the following statement:

“Sustainability is at the very heart of everything we do. We’re grateful to the North Carolina Manufacturing Extension Partnership for recognizing Enviva as a leader in sustainable manufacturing in North Carolina. I am very proud of our employees in North Carolina and the work they do in our plants, ports, forests and communities.

“Global demand for renewable sources of energy is growing, and scientist after scientist, including the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, has said that biomass is a key part of the solution to climate change. We are working hard in states like North Carolina to provide a renewable source of energy – both as a path toward using less coal, and as incentive to private landowners to grow more trees.

“Environmental stewardship, sustainability and care for our people and communities are fundamental values at Enviva. We are continuing to voluntarily make investments in our facilities to exceed current air quality standards and we appreciate the opportunity to work with local landowners and foresters who believe in keeping working forests as forests.

“I speak for our entire company in saying that we are honored to be recognized by NCMEP and look forward to our continued work with them in North Carolina.”

SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING: ENVIVA NORTHAMPTON

Enviva is the world’s largest producer of industrial wood pellets, a renewable and sustainable energy source used to generate electricity and heat. Enviva owns and operates wood pellet processing plants and deep-water export terminals in the Southeastern United States. They export their wood pellets primarily to power plants in Europe and Asia. Enviva’s pellets are made using sustainable practices that protect Southern forests. They employ about 1000 people.

Enviva sources wood from more than 1,000 private landowners and provides an additional market for their low-grade wood — increasing the profitability of timber harvest activities and creating an incentive to keep forests as forests. Enviva does more than make wood pellets — they help small towns participate in and benefit from the global economy, connecting local businesses to international markets through exports.

Enviva recently received an air permit for the Northampton plant that will allow it to:

 •

Install additional air emission controls equipment to further minimize air emissions;

 •

Increase the permitted production volume by about 235,000 metric tons of pellets per year; and

 •

Increase the permitted percentage of softwood (pine).
