SOLiD Reveals SURF™ Platform for O-RAN Compliant RAN Solutions

New class of open radio solutions enables greater cost-efficiency and flexibility to deliver high-performance 5G services sooner

PLANO, Texas--()--SOLiD, the leader in in-building coverage, capacity, and public safety infrastructure, today introduced the SOLiD SURF™ platform of O-RAN compliant radio solutions. This innovative family of open architecture solutions allows operators worldwide to diversify their ecosystem and speed the delivery of commercial 5G services. The SOLiD SURF platform is currently being tested in the United States, Japan and South Korea.

Based on the O-RAN Alliance radio access network (RAN) reference architecture, SOLiD SURF solutions provide RAN solutions in an all-in-one configuration compliant with open, multi-vendor specifications. Offering a smaller footprint, lower power consumption and greater flexibility, O-RAN compliant SURF radio solutions enable simplified network architectures that can be operated and scaled more efficiently. The SOLiD SURF solution supports 4G and 5G network architectures in all bands below 6GHz, including 3.5GHz Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS), as well as 5G mmWave bands.

“Open architectures are the future of our industry, enabling flexibility and ecosystem diversity for reduced cost, increased performance and faster scalability,” said Dr. Seung Hee Lee, CEO, SOLiD, Inc. “SOLiD is at the forefront of driving development of Open RAN solutions, and we remain committed to the O-RAN ecosystem as a vital cornerstone on the path to faster 5G evolution.”

As a contributing member of the O-RAN Alliance, SOLiD has joined other industry leaders advancing open, interoperable interfaces and RAN virtualization. An example of this leadership is SOLiD’s recent collaboration with Movandi and KT Corporation, South Korea's largest telecommunications company, to pioneer an O-RAN compliant 5G mmWave radio unit. SOLiD was responsible for developing the wireless technology in compliance with KT's open 5G base station standards to work with 5G beamforming antenna technology in the 28GHz band.

“The O-RAN compliant SURF platform enables private LTE networks based on licensed LTE and CBRS spectrum, as well as a migration path in supporting 5G NR,” said Earl J. Lum, Founder and President, EJL Wireless Research. “We believe that this solution can be scaled to support small to medium-sized enterprise networks for both indoor and outdoor applications, and offers a cost-competitive solution when compared to current wireless network equipment manufacturers.”

The first products in the SOLiD SURF platform will focus on in-building applications, to be followed by outdoor radio solutions as well. To learn more, visit SOLiD in Booth 1918 at MWC 2019 in Los Angeles, October 22-24.
