NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The United Nations Environment Programme – Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) has created The Principles for Responsible Banking, which provide a framework for a sustainable banking system and help the industry to demonstrate how it makes a positive contribution to society.
The Principles are critical since they emphasize a Bank's alignment with both the 2016 Paris Climate Agreement as well as the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It is a major step for banks to assess not only for positive impact but mitigating and reducing negative impact.
Domini Impact Investments LLC, a leading impact investment firm, endorsed The Principals and participated in the consultation following the initial draft of principles as a shareholder. The Principles consist of 6 parts and have been signed by 130 Banks, representing over USD 47 trillion, in 49 countries, also endorsed by government agencies, investors, and civil society groups.
The Principles for Responsible Banking were launched on 22 September, 2019 in New York City, during the annual United Nations General Assembly. More than 45 CEOs together with the UN Secretary-General attended the launch ceremony.
