DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Regional Transportation District (RTD), one of the largest mass transit systems in the United States, has launched the News Stop, a dedicated newsroom on its website to provide the most up-to-date news and information about the agency, which serves an eight-county area of more than 3 million people.
As a leader in mobility planning in one of the fastest-growing major cities in the country, RTD is committed to ensuring that riders, taxpayers, journalists and policymakers are up to speed on the latest news and the context of important RTD projects and decisions. The News Stop will report on both successes and challenges.
“As a public agency funded through taxpayer dollars, RTD has a responsibility to communicate openly and honestly,” said Pauletta Tonilas, RTD assistant general manager of communications. “We have a lot to communicate – some of it good and some of it not so good – and we plan to increase the news we share in the spirit of transparency.”
Celebrating its 50th anniversary, RTD is a national leader in transit innovation. RTD has embarked on one of the largest build-outs of rapid transit in North America in the past 25 years. It was the first transit agency in the world to collaborate with Uber, allowing people to view bus and train schedules and purchase RTD tickets within the Uber app. It was also the first agency to build commuter rail lines using positive train control as a new federal safety standard and introduce one of the first autonomous bus shuttles in the world near Denver International Airport.
Like other U.S. transit systems, RTD has seen a decline in ridership and is experiencing a shortage of bus and rail operators and maintenance staff. With limited funds to build out its remaining planned transit projects, the transit agency has launched “Reimagine RTD” – a two-year comprehensive effort to design the mobility of the future to reflect how people want and need to move around the Denver region.
