Collective Medical Receives Five Star Rating by the Medicaid Black Book

Collective acknowledged as an established company with extensive success stories managing care coordination across multiple settings for complex healthcare needs

SALT LAKE CITY--()--Collective Medical, delivering the nation’s most effective network for care collaboration, today announced the company has received a five out of five star rating in an overall assessment for Medicaid effectiveness by the Medicaid Black Book, published by Mostly Medicaid.

The Medicaid Black Book’s vendor evaluations are meant to provide an independent look at a wide range of potential partners for Medicaid health plans. The Medicaid Black Book’s research team conducts extensive analysis on each vendor, running more than 55 different analyses to arrive at the results. This extensive analysis is done to help Medicaid health plan leaders sort through hundreds of potential vendors to find the best possible partners.

Collective got its start working in the Medicaid space and has refined its approach to focus on helping care teams support the needs of complex, vulnerable patients. As noted by the Medicaid Black Book, Collective has an established Medicaid client base and an extensive number of published outcomes for vulnerable and complex patient populations. As an example, according to The Brookings Institution, in a review of Washington State’s ER is for Emergencies program, use of Collective as part of the program resulted in a 9.9 percent overall reduction in Medicaid-related ED encounters and a 24 percent decrease in opioid prescriptions written in the ED—saving the state over $34 million during the program’s first full year of operation.

“It’s not easy to get the full five stars,” says Clay Farris, practice lead at Mostly Medicaid. “In fact, a rating of 3.5 is considered strong. Collective stood out for several reasons, but the most important one is that the company has an extensive library of measured results for their solution and programs. We usually see one or two thin case studies when we do vendor reviews. Collective has dozens, with most of them getting into extensive detail about measuring success and impact on outcomes. Some of Collective’s supporting information is included as part of evaluations published by state health agencies. Talk to any of our health plan C-suite readers and you will hear the same thing: vendors need to bring proof. And Collective does that better than just about anyone we have reviewed.”

Farris adds that, “Collective is also unusual in this space because of the Medicaid-specific experience of its leadership team. The company started out in Medicaid. Most of our vendor evaluations are for companies that are trying to pivot into the Medicaid industry, but without the Medicaid-specific experience on team. Vendors underestimate the importance of this experience; Medicaid health plans do not.”

The Medicaid Black Book is the premier market intelligence subscription product for the Medicaid Managed Care industry. Each quarterly issue is tailored to Medicaid Health Plan CEOs and investment leaders, including in-depth reviews and ratings of 10 vendor firms that are currently working to partner with Medicaid health plans.

“Collective began as an elegant, yet almost overly simple, solution to identify and coordinate the care of at-risk vulnerable patients across the safety net,” says Chris Klomp, CEO of Collective Medical. “We had no agenda in mind other than doing the right thing for care teams and their patients yet we’re under no delusions—especially some ten years ago—as to the challenges of asking a provider and payer to collaborate together in potentially uncomfortable ways. But they have—especially in the Medicaid space—and as a result, they’ve changed patients’ lives by the hundreds of thousands and we’ve gotten to be witness to this. So, we’re incredibly grateful to have been evaluated by Medicaid Black Book and honored to have worked together with so many incredible Medicaid health plans over the years to improve outcomes.”
