For Three Southern California Couples, an Engagement Photo Could Be Worth Much More Than Just Memories

Fullerton, Joshua Tree and Pico Rivera couples are finalists in the Friar Tux “Our True Love Story Photo + Caption Contest”

ANAHEIM, Calif.--()--For three Southern California couples, a photo could be the key to their engagement story being named the most creative, original love story of 2019. But starting today through July 31, their fate lies in the hands of the public.

The couples – Pat Brassil and Faith Rummel of Fullerton; Andrew Evans and Chelsea Rocheleau of Joshua Tree; and Gabriel Rivas and Brenda Severiano of Pico Rivera – are the finalists in the “Our True Love Story Photo + Caption Contest(, hosted by Friar Tux to determine the most creative love story that ended in an engagement. The winning couple as voted by the public July 15-31 will receive a $4,500 Grand Prize that includes a Friar Tux tuxedo/suit rental, expert fitting and styling for up to seven people.

The largest family-owned men’s formalwear provider in the country, Anaheim, Calif.-based Friar Tux has outfitted more than a million grooms, groomsmen and even brides who prefer to rock a tuxedo on their big day since opening its first store in Lakewood, Calif., in 1974. The company now operates 31 rental and retail stores in California and Nevada and an online division, Stitch & Tie.

The contest is part of Friar Tux’s 45th anniversary which kicked off with a June 13 rededication of its original store, 1974-2019 tuxedo fashion show and official proclamations.

Each couple’s submitted photo and caption tells a unique love story:

  • Pat Brassil and Faith Rummel (Fullerton, Calif.) – A chance meeting on a dance floor in January 2016 led to a first date the following night and a lyrical, three-year love story culminating in engagement in San Diego earlier this year. The two will be married in March 2020 in Orange with a reception in Fullerton.
  • Andrew Evans and Chelsea Rocheleau (Joshua Tree, Calif.) – The two reconnected 15 years after growing up in the same small Connecticut town. The reunion at a Red Sox Game two weeks before Rocheleau was to relocate to California resulted in a whirlwind, five-year courtship and Evans moving across the country to join his true love. They will be married in October 2020.
  • Gabriel Rivas and Brenda Severiano (Pico Rivera, Calif.) – Severiano went on Instagram in 2013 to find someone to fix her car. Rivas responded and the two dated briefly before going their separate ways. A second social media appeal two years later – Rivas’ call for prayer for his brother in surgery – caught Severiano’s attention and the two have been together ever since. They will be married in August 2020.

“Friar Tux has a rich wedding tradition – in fact, no formalwear provider in the West has styled more wedding parties since we outfitted our first groom in 1974,” said Greg Goodwin, Friar Tux president. “And one of the best things about working with couples during this special time in their lives has been hearing all the remarkable ways that grooms and brides have proposed to each other over the years.”

The three finalist photos and captions are now posted at for public voting through July 31. The public is being asked to vote on the basis of creativity, visual appeal and best expression of the contest theme – which is a true love story that resulted in an engagement.

The couple receiving the most votes is awarded the Grand Prize, consisting of seven gift certificates valid for a tuxedo/suit rental, fitting and styling by one of Friar Tux’s in-house stylists. The Grand Prize also includes $3,100 cash for a total value of $4,500.

The other two finalists will receive one Friar Tux tuxedo or suit of their choice to keep. Winners will be announced on/about Aug. 1, 2019.
