APQC Names First Distinguished Research Fellow: Professor, Author and Advisor Tom Davenport; Launches Digital Transformation Research

Davenport, a well-known subject matter expert in process innovation, digital transformation, analytics and knowledge management begins his distinguished fellowship to identify how organizations can gain value from digital strategies

HOUSTON--()--APQC, the benchmarking and best practices research firm, has welcomed Tom Davenport as the first APQC Distinguished Research Fellow and launched an initial project on digital transformation. Davenport is a well-known and widely respected subject matter expert on all aspects of process and business transformation and most recently on the impact of analytics and artificial intelligence.

“Tom Davenport has been at the forefront of every major management innovation for 30 years and is one of the world’s top business gurus,” says Carla O’Dell, APQC’s chairman of the board. “His is a voice of reason amid the inevitable hyperbole that accompanies every ‘next big thing’ in management. He’s not bedazzled by the rhetoric; he’s interested in the reality. Tom brings a 25-year special relationship with APQC, as a keynote speaker at our conferences, a subject matter expert on several major research projects, a recipient of the Grayson Medal and a member of our board of directors. I can’t imagine anyone better qualified to be APQC’s first distinguished research fellow. We’re honored he accepted.”

For Davenport, the distinguished fellowship opportunity opens more doors to APQC’s vast storehouse of knowledge and data and forges connections with organizations and information that he can share via his diverse channels, including his weekly column for Forbes in which he has co-authored pieces with O’Dell previously.

“I've enjoyed my work with APQC for more than 20 years,” Davenport notes. “And, I am really excited about helping the organization think about new ideas for transforming work and organizations. As the leader in productivity, process management and knowledge management, APQC has a great legacy to build upon.”

Davenport serves as the president’s distinguished professor of information technology and management at Babson College; co-founder of the International Institute for Analytics; fellow of the MIT Initiative for the Digital Economy and senior advisor to Deloitte Analytics. He has written or edited 20 books and more than 250 articles for Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, the Financial Times and many other publications. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University and has taught at the Harvard Business School, the University of Chicago, the Tuck School of Business, Boston University and the University of Texas at Austin.

First Distinguished Fellowship Project: Digital Transformation

Davenport will serve as a thought leader in APQC’s digital transformation research effort, for which he will provide guidance to the APQC team as they conduct interviews and analyze content and findings. He will provide insights and support content creation based on results. The research will examine the impact of digital strategies on issues important to APQC members: process and performance management, data and analytics, human capital management, supply chain management and financial management.

“Our goal is to help people navigate what ‘good’ looks like in digital transformation, so they can employ best practices to get the most value from their digital strategy,” says Holly Lyke-Ho-Gland, APQC’s principal research lead, process and performance management. “About 75 percent of APQC members are in the throes of digital transformation. Tom’s expertise helps us set the bar for effective digital transformation, which will benefit business leaders across industries.”

Digital transformation leaders may email hlykehogland@apqc.org to participate in the project.
