MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--With the help of philanthropic support for regenerative medicine and biomedical research, Dr. Robin Robinson, Ph.D., the first director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) and former deputy Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), was named a Fellow with the Thought Leadership & Innovation Foundation (TLI). Robinson will lead the development of cellular therapies to treat wounds from thermal, radiation, and diabetic wounds to establish a new regenerative medicine program.
Bill Oldham, founder and chairman of the Board, TLI, says, “Repair and regeneration of skin cells has become an area of interest for TLI in the past year. When a person has diabetes, their wounds take longer to heal, increasing their chances of skin infections or ulcers. In cancer patients, skin reactions, ranging from a slight rash to severe ulcerated skin, are common side effects of radiation treatment. As an acknowledged international authority in this area of medicine, we feel that Dr. Robinson will significantly contribute to TLI’s research in the biomedical field.”
Robinson brought BARDA into prominence as one of the top 10 fully integrated R&D organizations worldwide, supporting advanced development and acquisition of drugs, vaccines, diagnostics, and medical devices for man-made biodefense threats, pandemic influenza, and emerging infectious diseases, including Ebola and Zika viruses.
Robinson says, “This Fellowship represents an important step toward ensuring that meaningful and quality therapeutic options are available which benefit patients around the world. I share TLI’s commitment to regenerative medicine and this new program.”
Robinson also serves on the senior advisory group for the World Health Organization (WHO) on emerging infectious disease and pandemic influenza.
