CHESTER, Pa.--()--Corvias, in partnership with the Stormwater Authority of Chester (SAC), Pa., celebrated new green infrastructure at a ribbon cutting for the Veteran’s Memorial Park Green Stormwater Infrastructure Project. Attendees included the Honorable Thaddeus Kirkland, Mayor of Chester, various members of the Chester City Council and functional departments, and representatives from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission and the Shade Tree Commission.

Scheduled for completion in July, the Veterans Memorial Park project will capture and manage stormwater runoff from roughly 1.56 acres of impervious surfaces associated with the local street, parking areas and walking paths.

“A few years ago, no one thought about stormwater and how you manage it,” said Thaddeus Kirkland, Mayor of Chester. “We simply watched our communities deteriorated and damaged by stormwater. I’m proud to say the City of Chester is one of the first to step up to the plate to not only manage stormwater, but study it to make sure there is a future for Chester and our young people.”

In addition to Mayor Kirkland, remarks were made by Chester City Councilwoman (and SAC Vice Chair) Portia West, SAC Executive Manager Dr. Horace Strand and Corvias Senior Operations Manager Peter Littleton.

“The park serves a vital function from environmental and community perspectives,” said Littleton. “Proper management of stormwater runoff is one of the most effective and cost-efficient ways municipalities can fight water pollution. The City of Chester is a leader in stormwater management and Corvias is proud to partner with the city to both keep the water clean and to contribute to the revitalization of the city through the creation of local job and contracting opportunities.”

As part of the project, three bioretention basins will be added to the park to help slow and treat stormwater runoff. Trees and planting areas will also be added along the walking path and grass. The plantings will beautify the area while helping to naturally manage stormwater runoff. The total area of the new park is 22 acres and is located at 2401 West 9th Street.

The Stormwater Authority of Chester and Corvias have partnered on this Community Based Public-Private Partnership (CBP3) to implement an integrated water quality program with an initial investment of $50 million of green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) with a 30‐year management term.
