Walch Mathematics Launches Curriculum Engine Platform, Enabling Districts to Create Aligned, Coherent Math Courses on Demand

PORTLAND, Maine--()--Districts’ efforts to teach mathematics are often stymied by the static nature of textbook content, which cannot adjust to different teachers’ and students’ needs, tends to go out of date as standards change and takes years to be produced or updated. To help districts and teachers better address the particular dynamics and needs of their school systems, classrooms and student populations, Walch Mathematics has created the patent-pending Curriculum Engine, the first platform that fully enables the on-demand design, editing and publishing of coherent, authentically-aligned high school math courses that districts will own outright. Walch will be launching the Curriculum Engine at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) national conference (Booth 1203) in San Diego, starting April 3.

“Our Curriculum Engine is reinventing the traditional publishing model with a new ‘Curriculum as a Service’ platform,” said Walch President Al Noyes. “We have been informed and inspired by more than a decade of working with leading school districts and visionary teachers across the country to design and custom build authentic, aligned resources. Now we are handing the tools and expertise over to school districts and teachers so that they can do it themselves.”

Educators can create their own resources by using the Curriculum Engine’s course builder and database to find and assemble relevant learning objects. The course builder is comprised of four easy steps. Once the user specifies high-level course parameters, selects learning targets and specifies the structure of their lessons, the Curriculum Engine instantaneously assembles a course, which can then be reviewed, edited and published.

The ever-growing database contains thousands of high-quality, ready-to-use components, from open educational resources to Walch’s proprietary resources, that the course builder can draw from or that educators can use as needed. These components are organized in an accessible fashion, and Walch’s librarians and editors vet them before making them available to districts. Subscribers can also add and modify their own materials. Importantly, the Curriculum Engine unpacks state standards in a granular way so that curriculum leaders or teachers can quickly search by standard or skill, identify the content they need and then assemble it in the way that best meets their instructional objectives.

The platform also comes with complete, ready-to-use high school math courses that district subscribers can own outright. The course curriculum, which is available online or in print, can be used in a variety of learning environments, including traditional, blended, 1:1 and flipped classrooms. Districts can choose to use the ready-made math courses as is, or they can edit course sequences, lesson structures and even day-by-day content to meet their needs.

“Research shows that teachers spend an average of 12 hours a week compensating for the deficiencies of traditional text books by conducting web searches, using sites like Teachers Pay Teachers and Pinterest, and otherwise cobbling together solutions,” said Joanne Whitley, Walch’s director of mathematics. “Now, for the price of a traditional course, districts receive a complete course in the Curriculum Engine plus access to unlimited, on-demand customizable courses and supporting resources. We save them time, and they know they are getting high-quality resources that are tailored to their needs.”

The Curriculum Engine works with leading learning management and student information systems, or it can be used on a standalone basis. The platform embraces modern technologies and makes use of IMS Global’s open standards for interoperability.
