NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--B&H is pleased to share the announcement of Panasonic’s first moves into the full-frame mirrorless market, with the S1 and S1R. These cameras differ only in the sensors they use—the S1 is optimized for video and photo and the S1R is the high-resolution option. Announced alongside the cameras is a trio of new lenses: the Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro O.I.S., Lumix S PRO 70-200mm f/4 O.I.S., and the Lumix S PRO 50mm f/1.4.
The Panasonic S1 features a full-frame 24.2MP MOS sensor and Venus Engine, which have been optimized for video and stills performance. The two technologies afford a native sensitivity range from ISO 100-51200 and a continuous shooting rate of up to 9 fps, with AF-S and 6 fps with AF-C. Excelling in video, the S1 supports UHD 4K60 recording, as well as UHD 4K40 recording with full-pixel readout, 4:2:0 10-bit color, and unlimited recording time. Complementing the video quality, a High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode, along with a dedicated Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) Photo Style mode, can be used to expand highlight and shadow details and offers greater flexibility when color grading. An optional paid firmware update will be available to further heighten recording capabilities with support for 4:2:2 sampling, 10-bit color depth internal recording along with V-Log.

The S1R, conversely, sports a higher-resolution full-frame 47.3MP MOS sensor, whose design omits a low-pass filter to achieve greater sharpness and detail, and on-chip micro lenses also help to achieve improved clarity, reduced noise, and an expanded dynamic range. Paired with a Venus Engine, the S1R has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100-25600, offers 9 fps with AF-S and 6 fps with AF-C continuous shooting, and supports UHD 4K60 video recording with 4:2:0 8-bit color. Additionally, a High Resolution mode automatically composites eight exposures to produce a single 187MP ultra high-resolution file.
Both cameras are also characterized by their robust physical design, which includes a magnesium-alloy chassis, full weather sealing, an ergonomic right-hand grip, illuminated buttons, and a top status LCD for reviewing shooting settings. One of the most impressive attributes is the high-resolution 5.76m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, which offers 0.78x magnification and 120 fps refresh rate, for especially smooth and clear viewing. A rear 3.2", 2.1m-dot touchscreen LCD is featured, too, and has a triaxial tilting design to better suit working from high and low angles. Additionally, the S1/S1R have dual XQD/SD card slots, support in-camera battery charging via USB Type-C, and tout a 5.5-stop-effective sensor-shift image stabilization system to minimize the appearance of camera shake.
The Lumix DC-S1 is available as a body only or in a kit with the 24-105mm f/4 lens, and the Lumix DC-S1R is also available as a body only or in a kit with the 24-105mm f/4 lens.Bolsteringperformance is the DMW-BGS1 Battery Grip, a new DMW-BLJ31 Battery and DMW-BTC14 Charger, the DMW-DCC16 DC Coupler, a DMW-EC6 Eyecup, and the DMW-RS2 Remote Shutter.
Announced alongside the camera bodies are the first three lenses from Panasonic featuring an L lens mount. Now working within the L-Mount Alliance, in conjunction with Leica and Sigma, these lenses will be compatible with all L-mount bodies. Covering a wide-angle to short-telephoto range, the Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro O.I.S. lens is a flexible zoom, featuring a constant f/4 maximum aperture. Its 1:2 maximum magnification ratio suits working with close-up subjects, and the Optical Image Stabilizer works in conjunction with the camera’s Dual I.S. 2, to reduce the effects of camera shakea great deal. The second zoom is poised to be a true workhorse; the Lumix S PRO 70-200mm f/4 O.I.S. is a telephoto zoom featuring a sophisticated optical design, a dual linear and stepping motor AF system, and image stabilization, to enhance shooting handheld. Lastly, the Lumix S PRO 50mm f/1.4 is the first prime in the series, and is characterized by its fast f/1.4 maximum aperture, optimized optical design, and dual AF system. Also, suiting the fast design, the lens touts an 11-blade diaphragm for a smooth, rounded bokeh quality. Additionally, all three of the lenses are weather-sealed to match the S1/S1R cameras when working in trying environmental conditions.
