Brazilian Surfer Claims World Junior Championship in Taiwan

TAITUNG, Taiwan--()--Brazilian surfer Mateus Herdy claimed the World Junior Championship title at the 2018 Taiwan Open of Surfing held by World Surfing League (WSL) in Taitung on December 9th.

The 17-year-old surfer, Herdy, defeated Eithan Osborne from the United States with a score of 18.37 to win the first prize of US$15,000.

“This has been the best few weeks of my life,” Herdy said. “I arrived in Taiwan and loved it straight away—the waves are fun, the people are so nice and it’s a beautiful place. I’m definitely coming back.”

As the sport event enters its eighth consecutive year, it continues to bring top surfers across the globe to take part, as Taitung Governor Justin Huang noted. Four young Taiwanese surfers, Pan Hai-xin, Han Zong-lin, Han Zong-zuan and Du Nuo-ya, battled it out on the waves in the final rounds of the domestic shortboard event, with Pan emerging as the final champion.

At the closing ceremony, Governor Huang expressed his gratitude to all athletes, the World Surfing League, the sponsors and the organizers for helping make the fourteen-day international sport event successful.

A wooden trophy designed for the Taiwan Open of Surfing, inspired by the shape of the tombolo that connects to Jinzun Harbor, was unveiled at the same day.

The 2018 Taiwan Open of Surfing, which attracted more than 200 top surfers from around the world, kicked off on November 26th and ran through December 9th.
