PointClickCare Joins Global Initiative to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance

In collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, PointClickCare analyzes millions of antibiotic orders and admission records

SAN DIEGO--()--AMERICAN HEALTHCARE ASSOCIATION (AHCA) ANNUAL CONVENTION – Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an increasingly serious global health concern that is compromising the ability to treat common infections. To combat this growing public health threat, PointClickCare, the market leader in cloud solutions for the long-term and post-acute care (LTPAC) and senior living market, announced that it is joining the U.S. government’s AMR Challenge, a yearlong effort to accelerate the fight against AMR across the globe. PointClickCare’s commitment is an evolution of its ongoing collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which involves data exchange and analysis on prescription patterns and processes in nursing facilities across the United States.

“Our goal is to help the CDC, and the health and senior care industry at large, better understand antibiotic prescribing practices, especially in long term care facilities,” said Dave Wessinger, chief operating officer, PointClickCare. “Our unparalleled repository of post-acute data gives us a unique vantage to provide insights into the ways AMR is impacting LTPAC facilities and patients.”

With more than 60 percent of skilled nursing facilities across the United States as customers, PointClickCare has access to an extensive data repository and in support of the initiative, it analyzed millions of antibiotic orders and admission records in more than 1,000 nursing facilities. The results of the data analysis will be published in a whitepaper authored by the CDC later in the year.

Unprecedented in scale, the worldwide challenge encourages governments, private industries, and non-governmental organizations to make formal commitments that further the progress against AMR. Commitments range in focus and scope and include tracking and sharing data, infection prevention and control, antibiotic stewardship, as well as vaccine, therapy and diagnostic development. To date, more than 100 organizations have joined the challenge.

Findings from the company's data analysis will be presented on October 9, from 7:45 to 9:00 a.m., during AHCA/NCAL's Annual Convention and Expo, and on October 30, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., during the LeadingAge Annual Meeting & EXPO.
