MIAMI--()--According to the latest data from OAG, the leading provider of digital flight information, Mexico City International Airport (MEX; CI: 181) is the most internationally connected airport in Latin America. This is the second year in a row the airport finished number one in International Connectivity for the region.

OAG’s Megahubs International Index 2018 reveals the world’s top 50 most-connected airports for international services, as measured by the highest ratio of scheduled connections to the number of destinations served. Mexico City International Airport (MEX; CI: 181) finished 20th for International Connectivity, 50 points ahead of Latin America’s second most connected hub, Brazil’s Sao Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (GRU; CI: 131), which came in 37th place and increased its Connectivity Index by 11 points over last year.

“Mexico City is in a prime geographic position with proximity to key travel markets, such as the Caribbean and the United States,” said John Grant, senior analyst at OAG. “Already relied on as a domestic and regional hub, we expect the airport’s International Connectivity to increase even more as the new $13 billion mega airport finishes development.”

El Dorado International Airport (BOG; CI: 122), Tocumen International Airport (PTY; CI: 104) and Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM; CI: 93) round out the top five most-connected airports in Latin America. Mexico City International Airport (MEX; CI: 68) and Sao Paulo-Guarulhos Airport (GRU; CI: 43) both performed strongly in the Low-Cost International Megahubs category, securing 12th and 21st respectively.

OAG’s Megahubs International Index harnesses the world’s most comprehensive schedules database to dynamically build connections through a dedicated analytics platform, Connections Analyser, and is further enhanced by OAG’s Minimum Connection Time Exceptions Table. OAG has calculated the total number of all possible connections between inbound and outbound flights within a six-hour window, on the busiest day for global aviation for the 12 months through July 2018.
