Cabin Unveils Patent-Pending “Cabin Cloud” Technology to Make Even the Bumpiest Roads Feel Smooth

First-Ever Active Suspension System Designed Specifically for Passenger Sleep

SAN FRANCISCO--()--Cabin, the end-to-end hospitality transportation company, today unveiled the first active suspension system designed specifically with passenger sleep in mind, Cabin Cloud. Combining patent-pending software and hardware, Cabin Cloud mutes road turbulence and dramatically reduces vibration, enabling people to get a dreamy night’s sleep while on a moving vehicle. This first-of-its-kind technology can effectively make the bumpiest highway roads feel like a smooth train ride.

Engineering the Future of Long-Distance Mobility

Since launching service in July 2017, Cabin has transported over 10,000 sleeping people over U.S. highways and collected hundreds of guest data points about its overnight “moving hotel” travel experience. It quickly became clear that road turbulence, or bumpiness, was the biggest challenge to solve. Led by Co-Founder and CTO, Tom Currier, the company began engineering a long-distance sleep mobility solution starting first with researching the effect of road vibration on the human body.

Cabin soon uncovered that active suspension is the only innovation that can truly solve road turbulence and that the team needed to build completely new technology from the ground up as no existing solutions catered specifically to passenger sleep - until now. So the company developed proprietary software to identify and map every major road bump between San Francisco and Santa Monica, and then built the hardware necessary to actively cancel out these bumps.

“At Cabin, we’re obsessed with architecting the perfect environment for sleep travel,” said Currier. “We created an entirely new technology system to help people sleep even better on moving vehicles - from buses and planes to trains and beyond. Think of it as noise-cancelling headphones for your body.”

How Cabin Cloud Works:

  • The patent-pending Cabin Cloud active suspension system was meticulously designed to work with low cost and off-the-shelf hardware and sensors so that it can be installed underneath each personal bed at an economically viable cost-basis.
  • Using a combination of standard sensors and proprietary predictive control algorithms, Cabin Cloud actuates the below-the-berth motor with millisecond precision to achieve an average reduction in acceleration of 70-90% depending on the road.
  • When going over a bump, Cabin Cloud instantly responds by moving the guest’s bed up or down to mute the vibration. The technology essentially transforms a bump that would take a passenger out of the deepest sleep, into a bump that they wouldn’t even notice.
  • The result is a dramatically smoother ride quality that guests say feels like they’re “floating.”

“Our goal is for every single guest to have an experience that feels like sleep teleportation,” said Gaetano Crupi, Co-Founder and CEO of Cabin. “With Cabin Cloud, we’re better enabling guests to achieve a full night’s sleep so they can wake up in their destination refreshed and ready to start their day.”
