LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As part of its ongoing community outreach activities, the Orthopaedic Institute for Children (OIC) hosted the Watts Bears football team on its campus recently, providing free sports physical exams for this unique team comprised of underprivileged youth in Watts and coached by members of the Los Angeles Police Department. This marked the fourth year OIC has provided this service.
Among the OIC healthcare professionals who donated their time for the day were Associate Director of OIC’s Center for Sports Medicine Jennifer Beck, M.D.; Associate Director of Non-Operative Sports Medicine Joshua Goldman, M.D.; Assistant Professor-in-Residence Nicholas Bernthal, M.D.; and Nurse Practitioners Jennifer O’Neal and Sean Warnock.
Together, these providers conducted physical examinations – which include orthopaedic, vision, vitals and an overall checkup – for more than 60 young athletes in preparation for the start of their season. In addition to the physicals, the athletes and their families had the opportunity to enjoy breakfast, prizes, assorted giveaways and activities led by Nike, the National Cartoonist Society and OIC volunteers.
“OIC is honored to lend our support to these young athletes who are developing lifetime skills that will help them create positive futures for themselves and their families,” said Dr. Beck. “The Watts Bears Pop Warner football team is a program that provides a safe haven and mentoring for kids living in public housing. We all have a responsibility to do all that we can to help keep all children safe, healthy and active.”
OIC is home to Los Angeles’ premier Center for Sports Medicine for children. Its state-of-the-art facility is staffed by a specially trained team of sports medicine physicians, pediatric orthopaedic surgeons, nurse practitioners, medical assistants, athletic trainers and physical therapists all focused on helping each child return to his or her sport activities as quickly and safely as possible with the shortest possible recovery time.
