In 1995, a California rancher, Bill Niman, met an Iowa hog farmer and soon they started the Niman Ranch Hog Company, LLC. In the beginning, the founding hog farmer, Paul Willis, sold 30 hogs from his farm in Thornton, IA to Niman Ranch for high end restaurants and famous chefs in California. The Iowa pork was very popular and soon Paul started recruiting his neighbors and then more farmers. Today, Niman Ranch is a progressive leader in the industry and a nationally recognized brand, with a network of more than 720 independent family farmers who raise livestock traditionally, humanely and sustainably to deliver the finest-tasting meat in the best restaurants and specialty stores across the country. Niman Ranch’s network of farmers and ranchers are 100% Certified Humane® and never use antibiotics or added hormones – ever. Today the network has over 600 hog farmers and sells fresh, prepared and frozen pork, including hams, jambon and prosciutto*.
