Iowa Virtual Academy to Hold Commencement Ceremony on June 9

Online School Honors Class of 2018 with In-Person Celebration

GARNAVILLO, Iowa--()--Iowa Virtual Academy (IAVA) will celebrate the Class of 2018 at an in-person commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 9 in Iowa City. A tuition-free, online public school program of the Clayton Ridge Community School District, IAVA graduates earn their high school diplomas in a personalized learning environment.

Following graduation, the 30 members of the Class of 2018 will enroll in two- and four-year colleges and universities or enter the full-time workforce. Members of the class report having been accepted to a number of higher education institutions, including: Iowa State University, Kirkwood Community College, Mount Mercy University, Northeast Iowa Community College and the University of Northern Iowa.

State Senator Mark Lofgren will deliver the commencement’s keynote address.

“Congratulations to the Iowa Virtual Academy Class of 2018,” said Senator Lofgren. “It is gratifying to know that you and your families had the choice of receiving an online education that enabled you to achieve this important milestone, and that you are set up for continued success.”

IAVA students access a robust online curriculum in the core subjects and a host of electives, and attend live virtual classes taught by state-licensed teachers. IAVA also offers student clubs, field trips and social outings to foster a sense of school community, such as this week’s graduation celebration.

In addition to the keynote address by Senator Lofgren, the program will include welcoming remarks from IAVA Head of School Steven Hoff and a commencement address by graduating senior Joslyn Shekleton. Mr. Hoff as well as members of the Class of 2018 are available for media interviews.
