Maine Virtual Academy to Hold Commencement Ceremony

Online School Honors Class of 2018 with In-Person Celebration

AUGUSTA, Maine--()--Maine Virtual Academy (MEVA) will celebrate the Class of 2018 at an in-person commencement ceremony on Friday, June 8 at the Augusta Civic Center. An accredited, full-time, online public school program serving students in grades 7-12, MEVA is available tuition-free to students across the state.

This year’s graduating class of 56 students reports having been accepted to colleges and universities across the country, including: Eckerd College, Hartwick College, Ithaca College, Pace University, Quinnipiac University, University of Plymouth and campuses across the University of Maine system. Two graduates will join the U.S. Air Force, and another will join the U.S. Army.

State Representative Matt Pouliot will give the keynote address at the commencement ceremony.

“Congratulations to the Class of 2018 for all they have accomplished,” said Representative Pouliot. “Maine Virtual Academy’s online learning platform has provided these students with a solid foundation on which to build their future. I look forward to what they will achieve in their next chapter.”

MEVA students access a robust online curriculum in the core subjects and a host of electives, and attend live virtual classes taught by Maine-licensed teachers. MEVA graduates earn their high school diplomas as they explore their interests in a personalized, online learning environment.

Sara Loiselle will serve as valedictorian, and plans to attend the University of Maine - Oronoco. Linus Obenhaus and Sean Pride will serve as co-salutatorians. Linus plans to attend Huntington University, and Sean will take a gap-year to focus on the golf industry. Sean was previously nominated as the Golf Player of the Year by Seacoast Media.

Along with Representative Pouliot, Sara, Linus, Sean and their classmate Clarissa Hemphill, as well as members of MEVA staff, will also speak at the commencement ceremony. MEVA Head of School Dr. Melinda Browne, as well as graduating seniors will be available for media interviews.
