PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Hill House Passport Academy Charter School (HHPACS) will celebrate the Class of 2018 with an in-person commencement ceremony on Friday, June 8 in Pittsburgh. A tuition-free public high school, HHPACS offers under-credited students in Pennsylvania who have not been able to finish their high school education with a new opportunity to earn a diploma.
Of this year’s graduating class of 74 students, half will enter the fulltime workforce. Students also report having been accepted to a number of colleges and trade schools, including Pittsburgh Technical Institute, Brightwood Career Institute and the Community College of Allegheny County. At least two students will join the U.S. Armed Forces, and several graduates report having been awarded scholarships from local organizations.
“Congratulations to the HHPACS Class of 2018, for reaching this incredible milestone,” said Principal Bo Jackson. “Our students face many challenges, and reaching graduation is an inspiration to all those who will follow in your footsteps. It’s gratifying to know that our blended model of online learning and in-person instruction and resources has equipped you to succeed here and beyond.”
The school’s blended learning model allows students to move through the curriculum and balance other demands and responsibilities such as work, internships and family. Students are required to attend three hours of in-person learning each day, taught by Pennsylvania-licensed teachers at the school’s Pittsburgh campus. Classes are offered in mornings, afternoons and evenings, with independent study completed online each day.
In addition to the school’s academic program, HHPACS offers support services such as career counseling, mentoring, social service referrals, internship opportunities, post-secondary education planning and personal finance counseling.
Pittsburgh community leader and author Brian Burley will deliver the keynote address. Mr. Burley is the author of YNGBLKPGH, and is nationally recognized for his work to promote a positive narrative about and in support of the city’s youth and the next generation of Black Pittsburgh.
In addition to Mr. Burley, eight graduating students will also speak at graduation.
