Valassis Data is at the Core of Community Rebuilding and Revitalization

LIVONIA, Mich.--()--Valassis, a leader in activating consumers through intelligent media delivery, helps community rebuilding efforts by providing a statistically-based snapshot of areas in need of assistance.

Valassis is uniquely positioned to provide a historical baseline and track population growth at a neighborhood level. Working closely with the U.S. Postal Service, Valassis updates its files weekly and provides analysis, further strengthening its powerful data. Valassis’ long-standing relationships with communities and nonprofit groups have boosted rebuilding efforts as well as attracted local, regional and national funding.

“Valassis owns the most comprehensive national address footprint in the country and we are truly excited to use this data to equip cities like Detroit and New Orleans to advance their rebirth efforts,” said Greg Green, Chief Data & Analytics Officer, Harland Clarke Holdings, Valassis’ parent company. “We are providing visibility to key information essential to secure funding and validate results as communities rebuild.”

In 2006, Valassis shared its pre-Hurricane Katrina household data with the Greater New Orleans Community Data Center (GNOCDC), a nonprofit agency, focused on the city’s revitalization. The data continues to be an important measurement to gauge repopulation progress.

“New Orleans’ rebirth is a testament to the power of Valassis data,” said Allison Plyer, Chief Demographer, Southeast Louisiana Data Center. “The data has been at the heart of our success, allowing us to create mapping systems, secure funding and attract new businesses and residents back into the city.”

Additionally, use of the data has expanded to identify areas of Detroit and neighboring communities showing signs of growth, helping to secure over $50 million in funding for blight relief and stabilization over the last three years.

“Having access to this information has led to investments in Detroit neighborhoods, as leaders, businesses, nonprofits and philanthropy have joined forces to support the city's recovery,” said Noah Urban, Senior Analyst, Data Driven Detroit (D3). “D3 has used the information to help identify multi-family properties in Detroit, filling a gap and creating a data set that was previously not available."

In addition to rebuilding efforts, Valassis data has been utilized for community planning, reclaiming vacant properties, water, sewer and gas pipeline management and traffic impact analysis. “The data is a powerful tool for community planning and investment,” Green said. “We are proud to partner closely with communities to further this important work.”
