Meet the Founder of an Investment Firm That Quietly Grew into a $40M Real Estate and Financial Services Platform in Seven Years

TAMPA, Fla.--()--Far from typical financial centers, Brian Katz has transformed his real estate and financial services private equity firm, Katz Capital, from a singular investment thesis into an expanding real estate and financial services platform in just seven short years. Founded in 2011 when the economy was still reeling from 2008’s financial crisis, Katz has continually focused his young firm on a long-term, patient and steady strategy. The result speaks for itself. His portfolio’s enterprise value is now in excess of $40M and includes hundreds of units across a multitude of holdings, nearly 100 real estate agents, and four lines of business for his eponymous firm: Pineywoods Realty, Pineywoods Title, Pineywoods Insurance, and Pineywoods Capital in Tampa Bay and Orlando.

“I prefer being the real estate private equity firm that’s flown below the radar,” says Brian Katz. “We have only been able to achieve our quiet milestones because of our stakeholders throughout the entire value chain – from shareholders, credit partners and employees to – most importantly – our clients. We are continually focusing on win-win strategies and cultivating stakeholders of similar mindsets.”

Early on, Katz adopted imagery of the bull for his private equity firm because it symbolizes strength, steadiness, and independent thinking. Similarly, his Pineywoods brands are named for the breed of bull native to Florida. He even went as far as commissioning a giant steel bull sculpture by a local artist that was temporarily displayed in front of Ulele last year, and will be a permanent centerpiece at a yet to be determined location.

Katz started his real estate and financial services platform with one small investment property in 2011, and eventually gained sufficient critical mass to establish, amongst other lines of business, a real estate brokerage and title agency. Today, Pineywoods Realty ranks in Hillsborough County’s top 30 in overall market share, moving up from No. 47 over the past year. Pineywoods Title has also continued to grow, ranking in Hillsborough County’s top 30 in terms of transactions, up from No. 42 in 2017.

In addition to the stellar growth of Katz Capital, he is a board member at Resource Bank NA and Anchor Specialty Insurance Company. He was also appointed to the board of the Florida Housing Finance Corporation, where he served from May 2013 to March 2017. Katz is a licensed Florida Real Estate Broker Associate, Resident General Lines Insurance Agent, and Mortgage Loan Officer, as well.
