PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--One hundred and fifty-six teams competed on the historic Rose Bowl turf on May 1 during The Bolton Foundation “Throw Down,” a daylong cornhole tournament that helped raised over $160,000 for California nonprofits.
Now in its fourth year, Throw Down invites local businesses, industry partners and employees to participate in the Bolton Foundation’s largest annual fundraising effort.
The event kicked off with the Bolton Foundation Beacon award ceremony, which highlights four select nonprofits annually for the positive impact they make within the communities they serve. The pre-tournament reception recognized My Friend's Place, Achieve Kids, Assistance League of Orange and Young & Healthy and provided each nonprofit with a grant funding check worth $10,000.
“Every year, we play to raise money for the standout nonprofits that are making real, lasting change in the lives of many people,” said Mike Morey, Bolton Chief Operating Officer and Foundation Chairman. “It’s a living, working example of The Bolton Foundation’s mission to empower those who serve others—and it’s a whole lot of fun to be a part of.”
Bolton Foundation Beacons are selected each year by the Bolton Foundation Committee based on their close alignment with the Foundation’s grant funding priority areas of community development, education, youth services and multiculturalism.
Money raised during the Throw Down is provided through participation fees and sponsorship opportunities, and it is used to provide grant funding for future Bolton Foundation Beacons, in addition to smaller donations provided to select nonprofits throughout the year
Created by the philanthropic arm of California insurance broker Bolton & Company, this year also marked the Bolton Foundation’s fifth anniversary, having raised over half a million dollars since its inception.

This year’s Throw Down celebrated the Foundation’s anniversary with festival-themed games, raffles and activities provided at each end zone of the field.
To facilitate Throw Down, Bolton & Company closed its offices on the day of the tournament to provide its employees the opportunity to participate in the event, which is completely employee-volunteer driven and overseen by The Bolton Foundation Committee.
