Kathy Freeman Co. Report Finds Investment Firms Will Face Difficulties in Attracting and Retaining Talent in 2018

New Report Offers Insights About Changing Compensation Structures, Millennial Recruitment and the Need for More Industry Innovation

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.--()--Investment firms seeking to attract and retain top-tier talent will have a very challenging year getting the attention of potential candidates, according to the 9th Annual Talent Trends Executive Survey from Kathy Freeman Company, a national, retained, executive search firm.

The report, Late Adopters Finish Last: Why Change Is Critical In Today’s Talent Market, forecasts another year in which most senior level professionals will be reluctant to switch firms. In fact, only 10% of those surveyed took another position in 2017, down from 18% in 2016 and from 15% in 2015. This is the least amount of movement reported since the firm initiated the research nine years ago.

By almost every measure, investment industry professionals are feeling positive about their careers and the industry,” said CEO Kathy Freeman Godfrey. “This is a refreshing contrast from just a few years ago, when dissatisfaction was at an all-time high. However, with a strong market, record-low unemployment rates and record-high wage growth, it will be a sellers’ market for talent in 2018. Firms must be prepared to compete aggressively to recruit and retain the people they need.”

The 2018 report identifies a number of trends that will shape the investment industry’s hiring strategies this year. Among them is the growing necessity for firms to overhaul outdated and costly compensation structures to ensure their long-term viability as margins continue to shrink. Survey respondents also said the industry needs to step-up its efforts to recruit Millennials and to embrace change and innovation much faster than it has.
