SA Photonics Completes 2017-2018 Navy SBIR/STTR Transition Program

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md.--()--SA Photonics’ participation in the U.S. Navy’s SBIR/STTR Transition Program (STP) for 2017-2018 is concluding this week at the Forum for SBIR/STTR Transition (FST), co-located with Sea-Air-Space. SA Photonics’ Chief Technical Officer Dave Pechner will be presenting the company’s two STP programs at the Gaylord National Convention Center. Open to all Sea-Air-Space and FST registrants, the presentation for Multi-Beam Optical Landing System (MOBLS™) will be in the Precision Navigation & Timing (PNT) Technologies seminar in room Annapolis 3 on Monday April 9 at 3:30 pm. SA Photonics’ Optical RF Memory (ORFM™) program will be presented Tuesday April 10 in room Annapolis 1 at 10:50 am with the Electronic Warfare (EW) Technologies seminar. SA Photonics also has a booth (#151) with product demonstrations at the FST.

The 2018 event marks SA Photonics’ ninth year of attendance in STP, a rigorous yearlong program to increase a company’s transition readiness for products nearing commercialization phases. The first of SA Photonics’ two products in this year’s program is MOBLS™, an SBIR Phase II contract with Navy ONR. MOBLS™ creates a ship-based landing guidance system that can provide continuous, high integrity, navigation-quality range and bearing data for a fixed wing aircraft during landing approach to an aircraft carrier. Based entirely on optical signals, MOBLS™ delivers autonomous landing operation and high data rate communications between the aircraft and carrier in RF- and GPS-denied environments, to provide a capability that does not currently exist.

Additionally, SA Photonics is concluding the STP for 2017-2018 with its ORFM™ program, which is an SBIR Phase II.5 contract with NAVAIR. ORFM™ provides significantly enhanced abilities to thwart military threats by replacing digital radio frequency memory with a fully integrated fiber optic based system. ORFM™ overcomes the limitations of traditional systems by covering an ultra-wide bandwidth frequency range, in addition to having low size, weight and power. By delivering this capability against new and emerging wideband and ultra-wideband systems, ORFM™ is able to significantly increase current and future defense system effectiveness.
