TYNDALL AFB, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Balfour Beatty Communities, a leading provider of property management, development and related real estate services for the multifamily, military and student housing markets, today announced first year energy cost savings resulting from the rooftop solar program implemented at Tyndall AFB Homes have totaled nearly $70k. Tyndall AFB Homes is a Balfour Beatty Communities owned and managed housing community serving active duty Air Force families at Tyndall AFB in Florida.
As part of the solar program, photovoltaic panels were installed on rooftops throughout the Tyndall AFB Homes community, with a total system capacity of 1.4 megawatts. The system contributes more than 35 percent of the community’s total annual power needs and, since reaching full operational status in May 2017, has exceeded energy savings expectations. The system’s installation required no out-of-pocket cost for the Air Force, and protects the on-base housing community from fluctuating power costs and the need to rely on local electrical utility providers.
Balfour Beatty Communities has taken the savings realized to date in the rooftop solar program and reinvested them into community improvements at Tyndall AFB Homes that directly benefit the Air Force families living there. These improvements have included roofing upgrades and both playground and community pool enhancements.

Balfour Beatty Communities’ rooftop solar program is operational at 13 of their military communities across the country, including Army, Navy and Air Force installations. Total system capacity currently exceeds 40 megawatts.
