Burlington Stores Donates More Than $2.8 Million to WomenHeart

As the Most Significant Donation to Date, Funds Raised Will Help Educate Women on the Importance of Heart Health and Support those Living with Heart Disease

WASHINGTON--()--For the seventh consecutive year, Burlington Stores and WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease partnered to increase awareness that heart disease is the leading cause of death in women and to support the millions of women living with or at risk of heart disease. Today, WomenHeart announced the most generous donation in the history of the organization of more than $2.8 million raised by Burlington Stores. This significant contribution further demonstrates that Burlington is a caring company committed to supporting the fight against heart disease in women.

From February 1 through March 31, Burlington encouraged its customers to join them to #KnockOutHeartDisease in women by donating $1 or more at checkout. The funds raised will further support WomenHeart’s education, support, and advocacy resources for women living with or at risk of heart disease.

To help raise awareness of the campaign, Burlington and WomenHeart joined forces with Multi-Platinum Recording Artist, Award Winning Actress and New York Times Best-Selling Author Vanessa Williams, as well as her daughter, Jillian Hervey of Electro-Soul duo, LION BABE. These women are no strangers to heart disease, as Vanessa lost both grandmothers to the illness, one at the young age of 28. Living a heart healthy lifestyle has always been important for both ladies, and they focus on cooking healthy foods, staying active, and maintaining yearly heart health screenings.

Throughout the campaign, Burlington also hosted free heart health screening events at select stores nationwide so that customers could learn their heart health numbers, the first step in empowering women to take charge of their heart health. Screenings included blood pressure, pulse, cholesterol, and BMI and offered free bilingual (English/Spanish) women’s heart health information and tips for living heart healthy. WomenHeart Champions, women living with heart disease, also shared their stories with Burlington customers. To encourage customers to participate in the screenings, Burlington donated $5, up to $25,000 to WomenHeart for each person screened.

“I am proud of the dedication and generosity demonstrated by our associates and our millions of customers nationwide. This year’s women’s heart health initiative was our most successful to date, and Burlington is pleased to support WomenHeart as they continue to educate women on the importance of their heart health,” said Tom Kingsbury, President, CEO and Chairman of Burlington Stores.

“We are truly grateful for Burlington and its customers’ commitment to women’s heart health, and we look forward to the progress we can make toward helping women living with or at risk of heart disease because of this partnership. Through education, support and advocacy, we can empower all women to take charge of their heart health and #KnockOutHeartDisease,” says Mary McGowan, CEO of WomenHeart.

Over the past seven years, Burlington and its customers have raised $11.5 million to support WomenHeart and its educational programs for women living with or at risk of heart disease. These funds have also enabled the organization to continue to support and educate Hispanic women—a high-risk population for heart disease—through its Para la Mujer Hispana initiative and to help further the organization’s National Hospital Alliance initiative, reaching women recently diagnosed with heart disease in communities nationwide, providing them with critical life-saving resources and connecting them with local support groups.
