SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, to coincide with its launch into professional baseball, the sports jersey subscription club Rep the Squad announced a new and unique jersey trade-in program that provides fans with an even bigger platform to amplify their fandom. Rep the Squad will now accept counterfeit, outdated and simply unwanted jerseys, in exchange for a discounted membership providing a crisp authentic jersey of their favorite player.
Traditionally, the sports consumer spends hundreds of dollars on a single jersey that may not keep pace with the latest trends, rapidly changing rosters, fan sentiment, or even a child’s growth spurt. Furthermore, professional sports leagues, teams, and players lose millions of dollars every year due to counterfeit apparel sales. Rep the Squad’s jersey subscription service helps offset those risks, and its new trade-in program takes their fan-first philosophy to a new level by providing fans with access to an impressive supply of current, authentic jerseys.
“The main goal here is to address a massive problem within the sports merchandise industry and we’re looking forward to having sports’ biggest fans wearing officially licensed jerseys for their favorite players and teams,” said Brian Watkins, CEO and co-founder of Rep the Squad. “We’re also extremely excited to expand into professional baseball and look forward to providing fans our extensive collection as we all gear up for Opening Day.”
Upon signing up for the new program, members are offered a 50% discount off the first month of membership and sent a prepaid mailer to trade in their jersey. New members gain immediate access to thousands of jerseys from Rep the Squad’s growing collection. Once Rep the Squad receives the trade-in jersey, they will provide an additional next month free of charge and donate any authentic trade-in jerseys to a local charitable program.
Rep the Squad also announced expansion into professional baseball. The initial offering will carry a diverse selection of jerseys from Seattle and Detroit, with plans to expand to other markets as the season progresses. Built on the access-over-ownership model, Rep the Squad provides its members ultimate flexibility to wear jerseys of multiple players throughout the season – from All-Star shortstops to fan-favorite back-up catchers – in a variety of colors and styles for a flat monthly fee of $19.95.
“Rep the Squad is truly an amazing company and as soon as I heard about the concept, I was in,” said seven-time All-Star and current professional hitting coach Edgar Martinez. “Baseball jerseys are part of the fan experience of supporting their team and I know that Rep the Squad will resonate amongst the most passionate fans in sports.”
Based in Seattle, Rep the Squad is co-founded and led by veteran e-commerce executive Brian Watkins. The company was developed at Madrona Venture Labs and is backed by notable investors including Madrona Venture Group, Maveron, and Brand Foundry, as well as champion athletes Golden Tate and Russell Okung.
Since launching last August, Rep the Squad offers a wide range of officially licensed jerseys for professional football (Seattle, San Francisco, Oakland, Detroit, and Denver), professional basketball (Bay Area, Los Angeles, Detroit, Denver, and Seattle throw-backs) and now professional baseball (Seattle and Detroit).
