Reverse osmosis is a technology that uses a semi-permeable membrane to remove dissolved salts or organic molecules. The water is pushed under pressure through the membrane that allows the passage of water molecules but prevents the dissolved salts and bacteria to pass through. A high-pressure pump is used to apply the required pressure for carrying out the process and depends on the salt concentration of the feed water. The semi-permeable membrane used for the process is usually made up of two materials, including cellulose acetate and an aromatic polyamide.
