9zest Tele-Therapy Solutions for Parkinson’s, Stroke and Chronic Pain Management

DOVER, Del.--()--A new clinical study of stroke patients shows promising improvement in recovery through the 9zest Stroke Rehab mobile health app. The study, published by the Journal of Neurological Sciences this month, was conducted at the end of last year comprised of 20 stroke patients approximately 6 months post-stroke. The purpose of the study was to determine the efficacy and feasibility of tele-rehabilitation delivered through the 9zest Stroke Rehab app via mobile device.

Researchers Fred S. Sarfo and Bruce Ovbiagele, along with Nathaniel Adusei, Michael Ampofo, and Frank K. Kpeme found, “In the present study, we noted significant amelioration of existing deficits among patients involved in this study particularly in motor impairments as well as cognition function… We have demonstrated feasibility and excellent user satisfaction involved with administering a mobile phone administered physical rehabilitation intervention for stroke survivors.”

The study was funded by the National Institute of Health, specifically the National Institute of Neurological Disorders & Stroke and the Fogarty International Center. It concludes, “overall, the intervention was associated with improvements in baseline motor deficits over the 12 weeks of follow-up.” This study’s results show improvement to patients’ stroke levity scale scores (SLS), Modified Rankin scale (MRS), and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA). Combined with excellent user feedback and universal intention to continue using the app, 9zest is shown to be a both effective and feasible solution for stroke patients.

“This is a great validation of our belief that mobile health can transform how therapy is delivered,” explains Manoj Agarwala, 9zest co-founder and CEO. Manoj developed this concept based on his own personal experience. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2013 and his health and mobility declined dramatically over the first 2 years. Things turned around when he began daily tele-therapy after experiencing the frustration of a lack of progress from traditional therapies.

9zest provides therapies for Parkinson’s, Stroke, and Chronic Pain through mobile apps that are multidisciplinary and holistic in nature. What ties these 3 conditions together is that there are no cures and no magic pills to manage symptoms. Physical, speech, and occupational therapy have been shown to be effective treatments, but they are expensive and inaccessible for many.

In the US, there are 1 million people battling with Parkinson’s and 5.4 million stroke survivors. The amount of people suffering from chronic pain is significantly larger, “More than 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain at a cost of around $600 billion a year in medical treatments and lost productivity,” according to a report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM). These costs are not sustainable, innovative new treatments and therapies must be developed. Manoj continues, “We are committed to making therapy affordable and available to people worldwide in the convenience of their home at a time chosen by them.”
