HERNDON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A K12-powered school student has been named a winner of the national “Choices in Education” video contest. Damácia Howard, of Union City, Georgia, is a ninth grader at Georgia Cyber Academy (GCA). Damácia receives a $5,000 scholarship from the Foundation for Excellence in Education and will be recognized at a school choice event on Tuesday, January 23rd (Details below).
“Millions of American students and families benefit from the opportunity to find the best educational fit to suit their unique needs,” said Kevin Chavous, K12 President of Academics, Policy, and Schools. “We congratulate Damácia on her scholarship and for sharing her powerful story with others.”
In Damácia’s compelling video, the high school freshman shares her journey of being bullied in a traditional brick and mortar school and how enrolling at GCA, powered by K12, changed her life.
“School choice gives my family the freedom to choose the education option that works best for me, and for that I am forever grateful,” said Damácia.
An honors student in her third year at the online school, Damácia dedicates much of her free time to service initiatives at home and abroad. She supports an international aid initiative, Books for Africa, which has collected and distributed more than 3 million books to children overseas.
