THIS WEEK: 75 Events in Paducah-Cape Girard-Harrisburg to Raise Awareness About School Choice

The Paducah-Cape Girard-Harrisburg Area will play a key role in National School Choice Week, the largest celebration of educational opportunity in US history.

PADUCAH, Ky.--()--National School Choice Week is underway in Paducah, Cape Girard, and Harrisburg and across the country. There are 75 events planned in the area to raise awareness about the options that parents have for their children’s education.

Nationwide, 32,240 events and activities are being organized to raise awareness during National School Choice Week (Jan. 21-27, 2018), and nearly 7 million Americans are expected to participate. It will be the largest series of education-related events and activities in US history. Celebrated since 2011, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort. The week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and it is not related to any legislative advocacy campaign.

The Week brings attention to the different education environments that are available for families in different areas. Families in Illinois can choose from traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, and homeschooling. The state offers a private school choice program.

Families in Kentucky can choose from traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online academies, and homeschooling. The state also offers tuition-free, public online schooling.

Families in Missouri can choose from traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online academies, and homeschooling. The state's public school open enrollment policy is one of the nation's broadest and most accommodating. The state also offers tuition-free, public online schooling.

Governors Bruce Rauner and Matthew Bevin have issued proclamations recognizing Jan. 21-27 as Illinois and Kentucky School Choice Week, respectively.

“School Choice Week provides families in the Paducah-Cape Girard-Harrisburg area with the opportunity to research and evaluate the K-12 school choices available for their children in advance of the 2018-2019 school year,” said Andrew R. Campanella, president of National School Choice Week. “The Week also raises awareness of the importance of providing every child with effective education options.”
