THIS WEEK: 62 Events and Activities in Wyoming to Raise Awareness About School Choice

Cowboy State Parents Encouraged to Look Into Education Options for Children During National School Choice Week

Governor Matt Mead Issues Proclamation Recognizing Jan. 21-27 as Wyoming School Choice Week

CHEYENNE, Wyo.--()--School Choice Week began in Wyoming and across America this Sunday, with the goal of raising awareness about the options that parents have for their children's education.

The Week will feature 62 events and activities across the Cowboy State, including open house events at schools, school fairs, homeschool information sessions, and other celebrations. In addition, a school celebration is planned on Friday, January 26 at the St. Mary's Catholic School in Cheyenne.

Nationwide, 32,240 events and activities are being organized to raise awareness during National School Choice Week (Jan. 21-27, 2018), and nearly 7 million Americans are expected to participate. It will be the largest series of education-related events and activities in U.S. history.

The Week brings attention to the different education environments that are available for Wyoming’s more than 138,000 children. For example, families in Wyoming can choose from traditional public schools, public charter schools, private schools, online academies, and homeschooling. The state also offers tuition-free, public online schooling.

The county of Laramie and the city of Guernsey have issued proclamations recognizing School Choice Week in their community.

“St. Mary’s Catholic School loves participating in National School Choice Week because we really think choices in education are important in our community, country, and the lives of children," said Patrick Lane, principal of St. Mary’s Catholic School, a private school serving 191 students in pre-K to 8th grade in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Celebrated since 2011, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort. The Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and it is not related to any legislative advocacy campaign.

“Parents in Wyoming have a variety of choices when it comes to their children’s education,” said Andrew Campanella, president of National School Choice Week. “We hope parents are able to learn more about their options and celebrate their choices at the dozens of events planned around the state.”
