Developed by Forrester Consulting, the B2B Modern Commerce Assessment compares a participating company’s state of preparedness against 300 global B2B companies.1
The confidential assessment provides participants, who complete a two-minute survey, with a personalized report that details their organization’s ranking. It also offers prescriptive steps companies can take to advance their organization through the modern commerce continuum.

The B2B Modern Commerce Assessment segments participants into three stages along the path to modern commerce maturity:
Modern Commerce Newcomer: Companies with this ranking are
resting on the laurels of how they’ve always done business, without
evolving to today’s new buying realities. The survey underscores that
companies must create easy and effective buying processes and selling
experiences to compete; and they must also deliver consistent
experiences and offers by embracing the preferences of buyers.
Companies must also deeply understand the sales processes of their direct and indirect channels, as well as leverage machine learning and data science as tools to automate solution and pricing recommendations.
- Modern Commerce Apprentice: Companies ranked in the Apprentice category generally fall into the intermediate stages of developing a modern commerce strategy. The survey recommends these companies develop an acute focus on today’s B2B buyers, whose preferences include buying online with a data-driven selling process.
- Modern Commerce Practitioner: According to the analysis that Forrester completed for the assessment, only 23 percent of companies have achieved Practitioner status. The survey applauds companies in this category that have demonstrated a desire to modernize, streamline and personalize engagement with their customers. Forrester also recommends next steps to solidify their positions to reach the “Off the Charts” level.
