Boarding Schools Offer Admission Opportunities To Students Displaced by Hurricanes

ASHEVILLE, N.C.--()--The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS) announced that well over 100 of the association’s member schools have reopened their admissions processes on a limited basis to offer a range of opportunities to students displaced by the recent hurricanes.

Though classes for the 2017-18 school year are well underway, many schools are making room for additional students whose homes or communities may have been damaged or destroyed in the wake of recent storms.

Admission opportunities at participating schools vary in duration and type. Some have created spaces for one term or the entire school year, while other schools will consider affected students for permanent placement. Some are offering reduced tuition or special scholarships for students in need. Financial aid opportunities include consideration on a regular tuition basis with some financial aid, one-time reduced tuition, or in several cases, even one-time free tuition, depending on the specific school. Simply go to BoardingSchools.com and click on the “Hurricane Help” button where TABS maintains an active list of participating schools.

TABS member schools offered the same type of assistance to victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the Japanese nuclear disaster of 2011. “College prep boarding schools represent a community of communities,” notes Pete Upham, TABS executive director. “I believe the willingness of so many schools to step forward shows a heart to extend this community to students in need.”

One student, Jennifer Czubak, was welcomed to Asheville School (NC) in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and said, “I was doing my geometry homework with a flashlight, thinking that I would go back to school on Monday. Then my school and the rest of New Orleans flooded. Asheville School gave me a place of refuge to catch up emotionally with all of the change. Going to boarding school, being accepted into a welcoming, rigorous academic environment, provided a great opportunity in a time of complete disarray. I escaped a little bit of the chaos and focused on my academics. And the experience opened new doors that otherwise wouldn't have been opened. I hopped on the plane with my hurricane bag, a pair of jeans, two shirts, some T-shirts, and stayed. It was a blessing.”

About Boarding Schools

Boarding school prepares students for life like no other educational experience can. It’s a learning environment that lives beyond the desk, beyond the bell, and beyond the expected. It’s a different kind of school experience that attracts a special kind of student, one who is looking for more unique opportunities and eager to challenge themselves more academically. At boarding school, we understand that student. We are made for that student. And to that student, we ask: Ready for More?
