LONDON--()--Technavio market research analysts forecast the global self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) market to grow at a CAGR of more than 4% during the forecast period, according to their latest report.

The market study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global self-contained breathing apparatus market for 2017-2021. The report also lists firefighting, industrial, and recreational as the three major application segments, of which the firefighting segment accounted for more than 40% of the market share in 2016.

According to Neelesh Prakash Singh, a lead analyst at Technavio, “The growth of the SCBA market is mainly driven by an increase in demand for SCBAs in firefighting operations. Also, the increased use of SCBAs in confined space applications in industries such as mining and oil and gas will also create the demand for SCBAs during the forecast period.”

Increasing incidence of fire accidents

There has been an increase in incidence of fire accidents in several regions such as the Americas, Europe, and Southeast Asia. This will, in turn, increase the use of SCBA by firefighters and rescue workers. The number of fire accidents are witnessing an increase in Asian countries such as India, Singapore, and China, which in turn is propelling the governments to invest in firefighting departments and focus on providing better firefighting equipment.

More than 19,000 accidental fire deaths were recorded in India in the year 2014. Similarly, developed countries such as the US also recorded more than 3,000 fire deaths in the year 2014. Also, in the last decade, there has been a surge in the number of injuries and deaths of firefighters in the UK.

Stringent safety regulations

Owing to increased number of accidents and injuries, regulatory frameworks are becoming more and more stringent with the introduction of many changes. Both local and federal agencies are coming up with enforcement actions to reduce the number of major accidents. SCBA is a critical component of PPE and is required by firefighters to operate in hostile fire ground environments.

Various standards have been developed by the The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for respiratory protective equipment (RPE). The changes in the NFPA 1981 standards were increased lens integrity testing, new voice intelligibility requirements, end-of-service time indicator changes, requirements for emergency breathing support systems, and updating intrinsic safety standards. These changes have improved the use of SCBA, in turn driving the SCBA market.

Enhancements in SCBA product formats

SCBA is a critical component in the personal protective equipment used by firefighters and rescue workers. There has been an increase in manufacturer efforts to bring advances and improvements in SCBA so that it can be used in a more effective manner. There is a need felt for the development of features such as light weight, reliability, improved and greater ease of use in SCBAs. Key vendors are working to develop such features to attract a large customer base. This is expected to fuel the adoption and subsequently the revenue growth of the SCBA market.

“SCBA technology is changing rapidly and is expanding to incorporate physiological monitoring and tracking of firefighters inside structures. Personal alert safety systems alarms have long been integrated into SCBA, and the potential for integrating other technologies such as command post air supply monitoring and management, thermal imaging, physiological monitoring, firefighter tracking exists as well,” says Neelesh.
