LONDON--()--According to the latest market study released by Technavio, the global laser marking equipment market is expected to grow at a CAGR of almost 5% during the forecast period.

This research report titled ‘Global Laser Marking Equipment Market 2017-2021’ provides an in-depth analysis of the market in terms of revenue and emerging market trends. This market research report also includes up to date analysis and forecasts for various market segments and all geographical regions.

Laser marking machines can operate on various materials, ranging from steel to plastic, with precision. The resourcefulness of these machines enables manufacturers to mark various materials and give them unique identities. Therefore, laser marking machines facilitate the efficient and effective marking of components and parts in many sectors such as healthcare, plastics, automotive, aerospace and defense, electrical and electronics, textiles, and woodworking. Laser marking machines eliminate the need for tool-based machining and minimize the production delays that are associated with the use of conventional machines.

Fiber laser marking

In fiber laser machines, banks of diodes are used to create the fiber laser light that is channeled and amplified through a fiber optic cable, which is similar to that used in data transfer. When this amplified light exits the fiber cable, it is straightened (collimated) and then focused on the material to be marked.

According to Gaurav Mohindru, a lead engineering tools research analyst from Technavio, “Fiber lasers create more efficient light compared with CO₂ lasers. In fiber lasers, the light is delivered to the desired spot on a material without the need for any expensive optical mirrors and other moving parts, unlike conventional CO₂ resonators or disk lasers.”

Co₂ laser marking

The global CO₂ laser marking equipment market is experiencing a negative growth trend as the newly introduced fiber laser marking machines are gaining popularity due to their enhanced efficiency. A surprising trend in the market is that the majority of the end-users of fiber lasers are subcontractors, while original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) account for the remaining share.

“CO₂ laser machines provide a smoother surface finish while processing thicker materials; the actual trends are a glaring contradiction of market expectations. Besides providing savings in power consumption, fiber laser machines involve lower maintenance and support, as they do not have the mirrors that CO₂ lasers have. Therefore, it is expected that fiber lasers will gain the market share of the medium and high capacity CO₂ laser marking equipment market in the coming years,” adds Gaurav.

Solid-state laser marking

The market share of the global solid-state laser marking equipment market is also facing a downward trend due to the intense competition from the fiber laser marking equipment market. Fiber laser marking machines provide superior performance over solid-state laser machines, which suffer from many disadvantages such as excessive noise that can affect the stability and sensitivity of the external environment. In comparison to fiber laser marking machines, factors such as high cost of ownership, huge size, and operational challenges reduce the preference for solid-state laser marking machines.
