Shegerian & Associates’ Carney Shegerian Comments on Recent LA Times Management Shakeup

LOS ANGELES--()--Carney Shegerian of Shegerian & Associates, Inc., a litigation law firm specializing in employee rights, has issued a statement about last week’s ouster of four top editors at the LA Times.

Several top editors at the Los Angeles Times were terminated recently as the newspaper's corporate parent moved to install new leadership. Davan Maharaj, the newspaper's former editor in chief, has been replaced by Jim Kirk, previously with the Chicago Sun-Times. Kirk's title will be interim executive editor, and he will lead the search for a new editor in chief. Also gone are Managing Editor Marc Duvoisin, Deputy Managing Editor for digital Megan Garvey and Assistant Managing Editor of investigations Matt Doig. Ross Levinsohn, the former interim CEO of Yahoo, was named publisher and chief executive at the Los Angeles Times. He also replaces Maharaj, who held the title of publisher and editor in chief.

“In light of the recent changes at the LA Times, we look forward to a positive culture shift at the top levels of the newspaper,” said Shegerian. “We’re hopeful that the Times’ reporters and columnists will now be treated fairly, and certainly better than our client T.J. Simers was treated under the previous regime.”

Shegerian’s remarks are in reference to famed sports columnist T.J. Simers and the writer’s age and disability discrimination case against his former employers at the Los Angeles Times. Represented by Shegerian, Simers won a $7.13 million verdict in November of 2015 in Los Angeles Superior Court, but the judge overturned the verdict.

That ruling is up for appeal later this year.

"The trial judge in the Simers v. Los Angeles Times case actually acknowledged and let stand the judgment finding that the Times’ previous management indeed discriminated against one of its own columnists after 22 years of great service because of his advanced age and physical disability, (i.e. a stroke),” explained Shegerian. “That part of the jury verdict and judgment remain intact. The sole question left will be how much will our client be compensated for that discrimination -- including a demotion, pretextual investigation and unfair treatment of Mr. Simers. Hopefully with new management in place at the Los Angeles Times, there will be far fewer cases such as this one.”
