Need for enhanced safety and improvement in productivity

Improved production yields and enhanced safety measures are important for subsea oil operations and land mining operations. Recent improvements in the reliability and performance of DTS sensing systems in harsh environments, including high pressure, high temperature, hydrogen rich environments, and fiber optic solutions are in line with the needs of DTS in the oil and gas industry.

Furthermore, optical fibers can go beyond data functions and transport as fully distributed and direct sensors. For distance measurements of up to 9 miles, Raman-based backscatter methods are in use for fiber interrogation. This allows pipeline and well operators to measure an entire wellbore and pipeline span in near real-time at a resolution of less than 1 meter. Also, for a distance of up to 37-mile DTS needs, fiber optics offer single-mode optical fibers, which are designed for demanding environments of the oil and gas sector.

Growing proliferation of fiber optic sensors

Fiber optic sensors use optical fibers as sensing element. These sensors can sense temperature, displacements, pressure, vibrations, rotations, and concentration of chemical species. Fiber optic sensors have applications in the remote sensing field as they do not require any electrical power at the remote location and are small. Fiber optic sensors are appropriate for rough conditions, including high vibration, noise, extreme heat, unstable, and wet environments.

According to Sunil Kumar Singh, a lead analyst at Technavio for embedded systems research, “These sensors are compact and can fit in limited space and can be positioned correctly wherever flexible fibers are needed. The growing adoption of fiber optic sensors in structural monitoring and the limitations of point sensors are driving the adoption of DTS-based fiber optic cables currently, and this trend will continue during the forecast period.”

High deployment of fiber optic sensors in applications involving high temperatures

Fiber optic sensors enable a seamless flow of operations in industries that involve working in high-temperature environments. Oil and gas companies are increasing their operations to meet the rising demand. Thus, to increase the safety of the plants, organizations are installing fiber optic sensors to leverage on their high heat bearing capabilities.

“The effective deployment of fiber optic sensors in nuclear and chemical plants enables the seamless flow of operations and enhances the safety of the plant. This will drive the growth of this market during the forecast period,” says Sunil.
