AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Southwest Engineers Inc., a full-service civil and environmental engineering consulting firm, today announced it awarded the 2017 Texas Civil and Environmental Engineering Scholarships to outstanding youth leaders and Crockett High School students, Joseph Baca and Gabriella Rico. Both recipients plan to pursue degrees in civil engineering with Baca attending The University of Texas at Austin’s Cockrell School of Engineering and Rico enrolling at Texas A&M University at College Station.
Southwest Engineers selected Baca and Rico to receive the scholarships based on their interest in pursuing an engineering career, academic performance and extra-curricular activities.
Baca was elected as a designing engineer at a UT Austin My Introduction to Engineering 2016 summer camp and was elected as a county delegate to the 2016 Texas Boys State. Academically, Baca is in the top 10 percent of his class and has received the AISD Trustees Award multiple times. He also has excelled in sports serving as his varsity football team captain and being named as Football 2nd Team All District Running Back. During his freshman through junior years, he was named AISD Academic All District. He has earned numerous medals for track sprinting events. Baca has earned recognition for his musical ability including placing 1st at the Crockett High School Talent Show during the 10th and 12th grades and participating in a live show with 512 Studios and at the Pflugerville 50th Anniversary Festival. Additionally, he has been active as a community volunteer and has worked part time at local businesses.
Rico was in the top 10 percent of her class during all four years of high school and received the AISD Board of Trustees Scholar award from 2014 to 2016. She also participated in the Einstein Program throughout her high school tenure. She has been active in the marching band, National Honor Society, Student Council and the varsity cross country team. Gabriella’s community work includes volunteering at Sunrise Neighborhood Youth Program and daycare, St. David’s Medical Center and SXSW. She currently works part time with Austin Stone Church and Zoe’s Kitchen. Her main interests fall with sustainability issues.
“We continue to offer support for students pursuing a career in civil or environmental engineering, and are thrilled to honor these future leaders. Joseph and Gabriella have demonstrated the drive and academic prowess needed to move our profession forward,” said John Littlefield, president of Southwest Engineers. “We believe these two very accomplished students will achieve success with their future endeavors.”
In its 11th year, the Southwest Engineering Scholarship Program has awarded more than $55,000 in scholarship funds to aspiring civil and/or environmental engineering students in Texas.
