WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Upside, a technology company changing the economics of buying necessities, today announced that its popular mobile gas app saved consumers over $300K on gasoline in the year since it launched in DC, Virginia, and Maryland. Unlike other gas apps, Upside helps consumers find the nearest gas station and pay less than the sign price by offering exclusive gas deals that can’t be found elsewhere. Consumers can either put those savings back in their pocket or, for the first time ever, donate those savings to local charities in the DC metro area.
How Upside Gas Works
The Upside gas app is the easiest way to find the best gas deals at over 650 gas stations in DC, Virginia, and Maryland. Consumers that use Upside get cash back because Upside allows neighboring gas stations to compete for their business in real-time, providing consumers with a personalized offer better than what’s on the gas station sign. To date, Upside users have saved an average of $1 per gas purchase and will save will save $65 after one year of using Upside. The highest individual user has earned $1,892 in cash-back.
“I think some people believe there must be a catch to Upside at first glance - free cash back for normal activities like filling up on gas (or eventually groceries) seems too good to be true. But, I just say - ‘Give it try - it costs nothing and you can start putting cash back in your pocket just by going about your normal daily business - whether it's to reduce your commute costs or save for Christmas or a vacation.’” - Upside user Derick
“I’ve earned $39.41 in just a couple of weeks. And that’s just from me getting gas whenever I need to get gas, and using Upside.” - Upside user L. Denise
Upside is focused on strengthening local communities by connecting consumers with local businesses. Since non-profits are an important part of local communities, we’ve launched GasForGood, a way for Upside users to support local causes through the cash back they’ve earned.
Through GasForGood, users can choose to donate their gas savings to a local charity of their choice, including:
- Immigrant & Refugee Services: Ayuda
- Food: Capital Area Food Bank
- Environment: Chesapeake Climate Action Network
- Veterans & Military Families: Operation Second Chance
- Children, Youth & Families: The Child & Family Network Centers
Additionally, non-profits that join GasForGood will receive a 2¢/gallon donation for every gallon purchased by their supporters through the Upside gas app. The National Foundation for Cancer Research is joining Upside as a founding partner in this program.
“We [National Foundation for Cancer Research] are excited to be a founding partner with Upside on this philanthropic initiative to raise awareness and funds to support prevention, earlier diagnosis, better treatments, and ultimately, a cure for cancer.
