NTT Communications to Address Cyber Security for Global Networks and the Internet of Things (IoT) at ITW 2017

NTT Com’s Michael Wheeler to Moderate Keynote Panel Focused on How Global Carriers Address Network Security and DDoS Attacks

NEW YORK & CHICAGO--()--NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the global data and IP services arm of Fortune Global 500 telecom leader NTT, announced its participation at the International Telecoms Week (ITW) 2017 taking place in Chicago, May 14-17.

Michael Wheeler, executive vice president of NTT Communications Global IP Network at NTT America, will join industry leaders on the panel “Working Together in the Pursuit of Security” on Monday, May 15th, at 11:45 a.m. The session will focus on the challenges created by constant cyber threats and DDoS attacks for businesses and the Internet of Things (IoT). The panelists will also discuss what solutions global carriers such as NTT Com offer, either individually or by combining efforts with other carriers, to improve network security and to mitigate DDoS attacks.

Mr. Wheeler has over 20 years of executive, sales management and operational experience in the Internet and communications industries. In his current role at NTT America, he is responsible for all financial, engineering, operational and customer relationship activities for the Global IP Network business unit.

“At NTT Com network security is one of our top priorities,” says Mr. Wheeler. “We look at security as protecting not only our Global IP Network but also our customers’ networks. DDOS attacks are among the most serious and pervasive threats that we see and we continually look to mitigate these issues.

“Historically, there has been a precedent of long-standing cooperation between tier-1 players that support the broader Internet and the security measures used to protect it,” Mr. Wheeler adds. “DDoS attacks are by definition distributed in nature, coming from various parts of the world across different networks. It’s therefore critical to work with other network operators to address those situations.”

Recognizing the continuously increasing size and complexity of DDoS attacks, NTT Com recently expanded the DDoS Protection Services (DPS) the company offers to its Global IP Network customers by giving them the option to choose the level of mitigation support that best fits their network security strategy.

The first option, DPS Control, is an entry-level tier of service that provides long-term access control lists (ACL) and is intended for customers that don’t require full mitigation assistance. Using the service, a customer can define permanent ACLs which are deployed on its NTT Com interface(s) to block a network from certain types of traffic as defined by the customer.

The second option, DPS Core, is an advanced tier of service for customers that require full DDoS mitigation support. DPS Core is supported by NTT Com’s Network Security Team, the same expert team responsible for keeping the company’s tier-1 Global IP Network (AS2914) infrastructure safe and secure.

Subscribers to DPS Core also enjoy exclusive use of the company’s DPS Portal, a platform where customers can request mitigations and configuration changes, and review past mitigation reports.

“There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but there is no question that NTT Com and the wholesale industry in general believe security is a critical and constantly evolving challenge to address,” Mr. Wheeler concludes.

ITW is the annual meeting for the global wholesale telecommunications community, bringing together participants from around the world and providing the opportunity to learn and network with industry peers, suppliers and customers.
