The national survey, which was conducted online by Propeller Insights on behalf of Ebates and fielded among 1,000 adults, revealed that when it comes to finding the perfect Mother’s Day gift, most men are off the mark.
Roses are red, gift cards are cool
If you’re looking for a quick and easy Mother’s Day gift, bypass the flowers and go straight for the gift cards. Almost one in five moms said that to make them happy this Mother’s Day, they’d like a gift card to their favorite store. This is followed by:
- An experiential gift—17 percent
- Jewelry—15 percent
- A spa day—14 percent
- Flowers—13 percent
However, when asked what they think Mom most wants this year, men take the easy route and select flowers (27 percent)—Mom’s fifth choice. Fifteen percent of men surveyed don’t think moms want a Mother’s Day gift (15%), but only 8 percent of moms said so.
Mom vs. Mother-in-Law
In the battle for affection between moms and mothers-in-law, it looks like Mom is the clear winner for Mother’s Day. When male respondents were asked who they plan to spend the most money on, more than half selected their mother (53 percent).
Many more Americans surveyed are not planning to buy a gift (19 percent) than buy one for their mother-in-law (3 percent).
Respondents also revealed that in addition to their own mother, the other “Mom” they’d be most inclined to purchase a gift for would be their grandmother (19 percent) or their wife (16 percent).
So Many Reasons to Celebrate Mom
As for why we should celebrate Mother’s Day, more than half of those surveyed say moms are the glue that holds the family together (52 percent). One quarter say that celebrating mothers is important because moms often ignore themselves due to their constant multitasking (25 percent). And some say Mother’s Day should be celebrated because moms are underappreciated (20 percent).
Most respondents say that they plan to celebrate Mother’s Day by either buying her a gift (38 percent) or taking her out to lunch (25 percent).
And for those who really want to spoil Mom, respondents recommend making her “mom fantasy” come true for a day. Almost one-third of moms admit that their mom fantasy is a mani/pedi or a massage/spa day (29 percent) or a shopping spree (25 percent). This is followed by:
- Afternoon to themselves to read a book or watch a movie—12 percent
- Date night with their partner—10 percent
- Breakfast and coffee alone before the kids wake up—9 percent
No advance planning necessary
Over a quarter of respondents said they don’t plan their Mother’s Day gifts in advance (26 percent) and purchase them about a week before Mother’s Day (31 percent). A few plan a gift six months (4 percent) or a year (3 percent) in advance.
And if you’re looking for the sweet spot of how much to spend, more than half of those surveyed say they plan to spend less than $50 (54 percent), and over a quarter will spend $50-$100 (28 percent).
