FUKUSHIMA, Japan--()--Fukushima Prefecture:

Sharing the Intense Technical Skills and Historical Beauty of Fukushima’s Handicrafts

Fukushima Prefecture is home to many traditional handicrafts, woodworking techniques, and folk crafts, passed down from generation to generation, including traditional Aizu lacquerware, Aizu woven cloth, and Miharu Hariko (traditional dolls created with a papier-maché technique).

These traditional handicrafts that Fukushima Prefecture is rightly proud of are being reborn with new designs to share the beauty of Fukushima. This effort involves collaborations with several creative professionals, first and foremost is the world-famous designer, Junko Koshino, who is working with a total of eleven companies. Other professionals are involved with an additional four companies.

Melding Traditional Techniques and Creativity in Ways That Suit Modern Lifestyles

These products, created by the different creative professionals, not only take advantage of techniques fostered and refined by Fukushima artisans, but also reflect designs that easily accompany our modern lifestyles.

Junko Koshino focused on products related to food and the ways we eat, creating dishes, placemats, and candles, among other beautiful items, to coordinate well with the things around our tables. Sales are set to begin this spring.

Take note of Fukushima’s newest challenge, arising from a fusion of the intense techniques that underlie our traditional crafts with world-renowned creativity.
