ASHBURN, Va.--()--Col. Kim M. Montfoort, retired Air Force officer and technical solutions lead for Telos Corporation, has been awarded the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association’s (AFCEA) Women’s Appreciation Award. The award is given to honor “AFCEA members who have gone above and beyond to further the careers of women.” She was recognized at an awards ceremony held at the AFCEA West Conference on February 22, in San Diego, Calif.

With 33 years of military service and six years of industry experience, Montfoort was selected for recognition specifically for her work mentoring young business and government professionals, and supporting and promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) scholarships and careers for female students in her local community’s high schools and colleges.

“Kim is always available to mentor, lend a helping hand and guide others to reach their full potential,” said Maj. Gen. Paul Capasso, USAF (Ret.), vice president of strategic programs at Telos. “Her passion for making a difference in the lives of young professionals in the workforce is contagious. This is a tremendous recognition for Kim and her tireless dedication to advancing the STEM careers of women, while strengthening the security of our nation.”

In her role at Telos, a leading provider of continuous security solutions and services for the world’s most security-conscious agencies and organizations, Montfoort develops and designs cyber security solutions for federal civilian agencies, the Department of Defense and the Intelligence Community.

A resident of Kathleen, Ga., Montfoort also serves as the small business liaison for the Middle Georgia AFCEA chapter. Her volunteer work includes building up small business interest in and support of her AFCEA chapter with the goal of building monetary support for its scholarship program. She has also established a quarterly luncheon mentoring series at nearby Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Ga.

During Montfoort’s tenure in the Air Force, she achieved distinguished leadership positions, such as the commander and CIO for 844 Communications Group, which provides IT support to the Secretary of Defense and the Air Force chief of staff. She also served as director of communications and chief information officer at the Air Force Reserve Command headquarters.

AFCEA provides a forum for military, government and industry communities to collaborate so that technology and strategy align with the needs of those who serve. It is a non-profit international organization with over 31,000 individual members, 150 chapters and 1,500 corporate members.
